I know what Frog Eyes needs: progressive jazz drumming.

Another track review from a site that has, historically, been very appreciative of the band. "I appreciate my own familiarity with bullshit enough to feel bad about suggesting this, but perhaps it is a simple calculus for Frog Eyes: in the moments when Carey Mercer feels completely honest, his band sounds kind of ordinary. In the moments when Carey Mercer feels esoteric on purpose—when he fronts mythological, shoots from the dick, soft-shoes himself off a ledge toward abstraction—his band sounds kind of astonishingly good. Kids: earmuffs! There is no lesson here." Eh... www.cokemachineglow.com/dailyops/5169/frogeyes-aflowerinaglove-2010

i'm not even really sure what he's talking about
you'd be hard pressed to find many frog eyes songs that aren't steeped in mythology and grandiose, abstract lyrics
i also don't know what the "moments when Carey Mercer feels completely honest" are, or even why the two sides he presents would be mutually exclusive

I am assuming the "honest" moments are simply the ones during which the lyrics are intelligible.
- I'M JUST GONNA SAY WHAT'S ON MY MIND NOW, BRO, I'M JUST GONNA LET IT ALL SPILL OUT: DID YOU LOVE MIMESIS? THE FIRST TWO CHAPTERS SIGHED I'M A FOREST I'M A FASCIST AND WE KNOCK INTERNAL SELVES. - Dude, I didn't know you felt that way.

I can kind of see what the track review's getting at - not that it's a particularly interesting point, but i think it's pointing to the impression of bareness, honesty that is created when the band is more muted, versus the flip side to that equation where the music and the vocals are so immense that it could only be "shoot from the dick" irony - to which I say "whatever".
Fuck this track is so good, awesome production... can not wait to hear the album.
