what a great night.
arthur and i got there about 10-15 minutes before frog eyes went on. i was worried we'd be late because due to painfully slow traffic on the way up, so it was a huge relief to get there with time to spare. there was a decent crowd but the small venue wasn't packed or anything. we talked to sydney hermant (hello, blue roses) at the merch table. sadly we missed her set, but she's a very sweet person.
carey was the most animated i've seen him -- he was jumping around and dancing quite a bit. the best moment was during the transition from "unconscious missive" (surprisingly energetic live) into "oscillator's hum," he was strumming wildly and pogoing around. super cool. in between songs he was his usual hilarious self. the new stuff was really powerful, and it was a treat to hear the old favorites as well.
after the show we talked with carey for a while and he shed some light on the decision to bring frog eyes to a close -- he mentioned that violet psalms reminded him of their early records and that it kind of brought the project full-circle. he feels that now he can assess the catalog as a whole and perceive the arc of their discography. he doesn't have any particular musical plans now, but would be "surprised" if he didn't continue to make music, since he feels like he still has songs in him. apparently he sold a lot of his recording equipment after this last record was made. he said at one point that he'd like to "tease out what was good about frog eyes" (referring to future musical endeavors). he also said he was working on a novel but it had gotten sidelined due to his kid, his job, and music. he asked us how we felt about the lack of a lyric sheet on the new album, and we encouraged him to put the lyrics up online (possibly on bandcamp). the decision to not include them this time was partially because he felt they were more understandable than usual and also a desire to save paper.
i told mel that i hoped she wasn't going to stop playing drums and she was like "no, no." which was good to hear. we chatted briefly to shyla about her synths on the new record and she's super cool. terri is nice too. they all seemed excited to meet us message board folks and were impressed we drove from rochester to see them.
so yeah, great show, great band, lovely folks. looking forward to possibly catching them again this summer.

We saw the last two shows in Portland and Seattle. Both shows were great, but Portland was especially amazing. One of the more energetic Frog Eyes performances I've ever seen.
The Portland setlist was:
Little Mothers Idea Man The Beat is Down Two Girls Masticated Outboard Motors Rejoinders in a Storm On a Finely Sewn Sleeve A Strand of Blue Stars Violent Psalms I Like Dot Dot Dot Unconscious Missive The Oscillator's Hum Claxxon's Lament Idle Songs Don't Sleep Under Stars A Latex Ice Age Sound Travels from the Snow to the Dark The Policy Merchant, the Silver Bay Pay For Fire
Seattle was similar except they did I Ain't Around Much and Three Man Drown in the River and didn't do Rejoinders. I also spotted Dan Bejar in the audience in Seattle.
Some nice moments:
-The story of first finding the dinger, then leaving it in their backyard for years, then trying to start a fire in it, and now paying $300 to bring it to New York. -Guns n Roses original name was Good-natured Ribbing -A story about playing a show in St. Louis that was invaded by Chicago Punks, getting locked in the venue overnight, driving to Seattle on very little sleep, and receiving an email that was critical of the performance. -Terri coming to the front of the stage and showing off some rock moves during the bass solo in Idle Songs -Carey's performance tips from Toastmasters
One more show for us in SF on Thursday.

I'm super excited to see them on Monday! It'll only be the 2nd time ever, and the last time was over 11 years ago in Atlanta. (The perils of living in the southeast USA) I'm driving up from Alabama to DC on Sunday.

New York was really, really good! I'm in Philly right now, so I won't be able to post a ton about it, but the band was really tight and fun. Carey killed it with some bits about anthropomorphizing the dinger and gendered discourse and how Rejoinders in a Storm is a 'half-baked, shitty, forever-pailing version of Frog Eyes doing the Doors'.
I have the show recorded with high-quality binaural microphones, and I'll get around to cleaning/sharing those in time.
I also met (and drove down to Philly with) Mike, which means I think I get a free hamburger in exchange for my Whiskers punch card. Good times, all.
Philly tonight.

Dying for details on the very last Frog Eyes shows, guys. I sadly couldn't afford to travel to any show from Mid-Michigan. Would love setlists, banter, etc.

They played 20 something songs. The last 2 songs were Sound Travels (1st song from 1st album) and Pay for Fire (last song on last album). They brought out a cake that said "Frog Eyes 2001-2018" and cut it up for everyone to have a piece. It was good cake. He assured us that the music is not finished, just Frog Eyes. It was a special night.
