This album is a ton of fun, I like it a lot, and I know that young me would have absolutely despised it at first and said something crass about the rhyming

So yeah let's talk about the rhyming because I thought: hey hey whoa whoa there pardner what's with all this rhyming?
But it's been there the whole time.
Oh who's that drugged-up queen? The nation called, the poisoned scene Is back but look where you've been Oh baby wake up I'll talk for the queen At Poisoned Falls, the royal scene I bet they'll hiss like fiends Oh baby, wake up
Oh dear! You are the water And I lower myself, myself into your water Like a mealy-mouthed calf that is suckered to the slaughter Like a green serpent coiled upon the breast of your daughter
Oh, hate so bad from the drumming pounding pad When the crystal meta mountain made the early morning sad I know not the remnants of the cold lieutenant’s dad
So why is the rhyming on the last two records more noticeable? Is it the cadence? Slower delivery? Or that one can make out the actual words being sung? Vocals up front in the mix? The writing has matured--he's unafraid of saying what he means. it's more plain and direct, so it's easier to pay attention to the lyrics. I don't know man but i'm so happy the vibe continues to change.

I agree with you and have done 0 analysis yet. Maybe he's changing rhyme sounds way faster?
A lot of these felt on first listen to be Beastie Boys rhymes, too, where the rhyme sound only appears in the last syllable of the line?
Excited to dig in more, though

this is great! i love how the interviewer actually asks about specific songs or moments in songs. it was interesting to hear that carey would labor on vocals for months when home-recording them. i never would have expected that. the vocals on the new record (the first he did in a studio in a decade, he said) are really excellent.

this may prove to be one of my favorite frog eyes records… the songwriting is just excellent, mel’s drumming has never been better (or better sounding!), and the production is so so easy on the ears. i like how it’s got some hints of the old, creepy side of frog eyes in the fringes. i like how “the bees” sounds like the slow part of a much longer _paul’s tomb_ song, but better.
and the vocals! we’re all used to it by now, but carey is astonishing performer and he’s really bringing it on these songs.

“everything dies” sounds like a throwback to a bloody hand-style song (sonically not lyrically)

maybe “everything dies” is carey’s message to this board…
