i'm completely ignorant of non-DOOM hippity hop.
is there some sort of primer or compilation or a stack of albums i can listen to?
i at least need a short course in wu-tang and its offshoots.
or should i just be happy with metalface?

I like People say "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" is the essential Wu-Tang album. it's not. your best point of entry to wu-tang is probably raekwon's OBFCLII which has oodles of awesome [and appearances by pretty much everyone], ghostface's fishscale, and then 36 chambers wu-massacre is a good listen too because it's short and pretty focused. it's good if you're not sure how much wu you can handle i'm a bit behind on the wu. exhibit c by jay electronica is the best rap song of 2009 and CLASSIC-- he has almost no proper releases but the stuff he's done is incredible. [went in over the film score of eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, among other things] illmatic by nas has great lyrics but hasn't aged well, the blueprint by jay-z is solid but suffers from bouts of weak lyricism, and i don't feel much of early tribe except for buggin' out and can i kick it? quality control by jurassic 5 if you're looking to get your groove on. the beats are excellent, there. of rappers still rapping, shad's TSOL is a great album, Big K.R.I.T.'s krit wuz here mixtape is excellent in points, das racist's shut up dude is 30% awesome and 70% wtf, g-side's huntsville international mixtape is backloaded and excellent i'm not nearly as knowledgeable with del tha funkee homosapien as i should be but deltron 3030 is an interesting album with excellent production jay-z is 50% good albums 50% terrible albums: american gangster is the high water mark, BP3 the low water mark if you need me to expand on any of these points, just ask

Def listen to Enter the Wu-Tang as well as their other albums though none match the debut. Be sure to check out these solo Wu albums.
Ol Dirty Bastard- Return to the 36 Chambers GZA- Liquid Swords Method Man- Tical Raekwon- Only Built For Cuban Linx Ghostface Killah- Supreme Clientele
Agree with Deltron 3030, for solo Del I like No Need for Alarm and Both Sides of the Brain. He was a member of a West Coast group called Hieroglyphics that are also great.

Also for a bit more experimental hip-hop you can't beat cLOUDDEAD.

the album i've been listening to is 'Bastard'. i like the song "French" a lot. good lo fi beats. though one track is almost exactly the same beat as mf doom's one beer. weird. i'm assuming the lyrics are so incredibly hate-filled to be silly. www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNrRwGrNzsc
